A special gift announcement to the PECMH Foundation

Two words could sum up how the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation feels toward a local family: endless gratitude.

Approximately 150 friends, family and community members gathered on Wednesday at Wellington’s Highline Hall to recognize and celebrate longtime County residents and philanthropists, Lanny and Catharine Huff. They are perhaps best known for their continuous and generous financial support to so many worthy not-for-profit organizations in our community and beyond. Appreciation for this special couple was unwavering as they were lauded for their unselfish service to our community.

Longtime supporters of the hospital Foundation, Lanny and Catharine have once again stepped forward to show their commitment to our County hospital with the announcement of a significant pledge to our Back the Build Campaign.

“We have a special place in our hearts for Catharine and Lanny…not only now, as we stand on the cusp of a major capital campaign to building a new hospital in the County…but for past occasions when they have so generously donated to our annual fund-raising endeavours to raise money to purchase the critical medical equipment for our hospital. That’s the Foundation’s job,” said Monica Alyea, chairperson of the Foundation.

This past February, with our project partners, the proposed redevelopment of our County hospital entered Stage two of a five stage process. The proposal to the Ministry is that PECMH continues to offer the same services that are currently offered. The new PECMH would continue to provide acute hospital care, 24-hour emergency services, diagnostic imaging and efficient access to the other hospitals in our area.

Hospital Foundation representatives were overflowing with gratitude to receive this leadership donation to the capital campaign. The Huff’s transformational gift is the largest the Foundation has ever received and is restricted to the new hospital project.

“It is with great respect and gratitude that I say, on behalf of the Foundation, as well as the County residents and visitors alike who benefit every time they step across the threshold of our hospital…thank you. Your generous, early gift to our new hospital capital fund has given us tremendous momentum to see the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care application process through to its positive conclusion. It can’t come too soon…and we are beginning to see it transform from dreams and desires to a vision,” said Alyea.

Also as part of the evening, a special trust was unveiled by The County Foundation. Set up by Catharine Huff, the Huff Family Fund will encourage and support the incredible work that our many community groups pursue to make our County so special. The Huff Family Fund will support organizations and institutions, through grants, that support projects and programs based in Prince Edward County, serving Prince Edward County people. “And in case you didn’t realize it, the province doesn’t provide any funds at all for medical equipment. Every dollar that is needed is raised by the PECMH Foundation through our annual fund-raising….and it is the community…you and your neighbours, your friends and your family…who make that happen. And year by year, Lanny and Catharine have been with us, helping us achieve our goals,” Alyea said.

Lanny and Catharine’s faithful support gets the hospital Foundation one step closer to realizing this vision for the future. We cannot thank them enough for their tremendous foresight and County-first approach to helping and inspiring others to give back to the causes that are important to them.
