The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has once again championed the purchase of priority medical equipment needed at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital.
The generosity of the volunteers with the PECMH Auxiliary in donating $138,179.46 during the 2018/19 fiscal year has brought several pieces of medical and supportive equipment to our County hospital and today’s announcement will mark the successful end of PECMH Foundation’s equipment fund drive from last year.
The PECMH Foundation Board of Directors and staff celebrated with PECMH Auxiliary volunteers at the Second Time Around Shop on Tuesday where the Auxiliary members presented the Foundation with $50,000.
The equipment the Auxiliary helped purchase last year included a pediatric monitor used in the PECMH Emergency Department, a trauma stretcher, two ceiling lifts and eight over bed tables. Their most recent infusion of $50,000 helped offset the cost of one replacement colonoscope and two gastroscopes for the Endoscopy Department at PECM Hospital.
The $50,000 received by the Foundation means all of the equipment on the 2018/19 list has been paid for. A total of $289,724 was needed in 2018/19 by the Foundation for equipment.
Foundation Chair Monica Alyea thanked the PECMH Auxiliary for supporting Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital. “Your donations and ongoing support mean County residents and patients continue to have access to state-of-the-art medical equipment in a vibrant community hospital, close to home.”
The PECMH Auxiliary is happy to partner with the Foundation to help successfully complete last year’s equipment fund campaign. We were able to contribute $50,000 from the annual Festival of Trees towards the pediatric monitor and other equipment with the remaining coming from our ongoing fundraising initiatives including sales from the Second Time Around Shop. With the support of the community, our volunteers are pleased to raise funds that contribute to the health and wellbeing of our community,” said Pat Evans, president of the PECMH Auxiliary.
The Auxiliary supports and assists Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital, its patients and staff, and the local community in meeting their health care needs through service and fundraising. The Second Time Around Shop earns the lion’s share of the Auxiliary’s fundraising income. It raises funds for the hospital, fills a need in our community and is a fun place to shop.
“The success of the Second Time Around Shop is so reliant on the tireless volunteers who give so many hours. Operating the store is a huge undertaking and we’re so grateful for the help we have that ensures the store runs smoothly and is open six days a week. Also, we couldn’t raise the funds to support our hospital if it wasn’t for our community members who continue to donate so generously,” said Pam Strachan, volunteer manager of the Second Time Around Shop.
While the need for priority medical equipment never stops, the PECMH Foundation is excited to embark on a new equipment campaign for the 2019/20 fiscal year. Our efforts again this year focus on securing medical and supportive equipment for most of the departments at PECMH at a cost of $436,600. Again, the Foundation is asking for public support to help us equip our hospital, while at the same time raising funds for the new hospital campaign.
Some of the items on this year’s equipment list include replacing the portable X-ray machine, replacing 32 infusion pumps and purchasing a new defibrillator for the Emergency Department. The Foundation also hopes to hear favourable news from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care regarding the Stage 2 submission for the redevelopment of our hospital in June.
County residents and businesses are beginning to pledge support for this year’s equipment campaign and new hospital efforts. Events supporting these equipment purchases will include the 5th annual Teeing Up Fore Health Care golf classic on June 11. Proceeds from Bid for the Build Art Auction on May 11 and Uncork Canada on June 15th will be directed to the new hospital.
“The Foundation is really about you, the donors. Our job is to raise the needed funds so our care providers are best equipped to treat our patients. The Foundation plays a critical role in providing funding for essential, specialized equipment. Your dollars go a long way towards improving care for residents in our community. Thank you to our Auxiliary and to our ongoing donors. New donors are always welcome and there are numerous ways to get involved. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference in the care you and your family receive,” said Shannon Coull, executive director with the PECMH Foundation. “We are blessed living in this generous community which ensures we have a vibrant hospital armed with the best medical equipment possible.”
