Third Annual Curl-A-Thon for Back the Build a Sweeping Success

bboyce • March 27, 2025

Representatives from the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) Foundation were rocked this week, when the Prince Edward Curling Club members presented $45,363.00 that will Back the Build for a new PECMH.

The curling club hosted their third curl-a-thon on Saturday, February 8 in support of PECMH Foundation’s Back the Build campaign. In total, 96 curlers took to the ice in two-hour blocks to raise funds for the new hospital campaign.

The curl-a-thon swept together new and experienced curlers from the community to support the hospital foundation.

“The outpouring of support from so many people and local businesses was incredible again this year,” said Pam Piercey on behalf of the Prince Edward Curling Club. “Our members always come through; there was no exception this time. We had tremendous support from those staffing the kitchen, helping on-ice, and those tending to the bar.”

While curlers solicited donations from family and friends, the local business community came through with food donations, and prizes for the top pledge earners. The curling club donated ice time and provided equipment, instruction, and volunteers to organize the event. The entire community's generosity helped maximize the foundation's proceeds, totaling over $150,000 in the last three years

“The heart of Prince Edward County shines in moments like this—when community spirit, generosity, and a shared vision come together in support of the new PECMH. With construction of the new hospital underway, every curler, donor, and volunteer is helping to bring this incredible project to life. Thank you for sweeping us closer to the finish line!” Said Stacey Daub, President and CEO Quinte Health.

Each year, the foundation is fortunate to receive many inquiries from groups, businesses, and individuals wishing to organize third-party events supporting the hospital. The foundation is grateful to have been named the beneficiary of this event for the third year running.

“The support we continue to receive from the curling club and the broader community is truly inspiring,” said Shannon Coull, Executive Director of the PECMH Foundation. “This event has become a vital part of our fundraising efforts, and we are so thankful for the ongoing commitment to the Back the Build campaign.”

"The continued generosity of the Prince Edward Curling Club will have a lasting impact on how healthcare is delivered in our community for years to come,” said Nancy Parks, Back the Build campaign chairperson. “We are deeply grateful for this incredible support for our new hospital.”
